Real Salt Lake looked the better team but came up short against a New York City FC defense – and goalkeeper – who kept them off the scoreboard on Matchday 17. Here are your NYCFC highlights.
NYCFC took the field with a makeshift backline missing central defenders Maxime Chanot (yellow card accumulation) and Thiago Martins (knee surgery). Midfielders Justin Haak and James Sands joined backup central defender Tony Alfaro in a back-three that held their own — and were the beneficiaries of some lucky plays.
The real hero of the match of Luis Barraza, who made four crucial saves in earning his third clean sheet of the season. Barraza prevailed in a number of one-vs-one contests: This was easily his best performance of the season.
Scoring goals remain a problem for NYCFC. The team were one touch away from stealing a win on the road. Or, to put it more bluntly, they’re one No 9 away from grabbing more points and climbing the table.
Still, New York City have to be happy with this result as they prepare to face a tough Columbus Crew on Saturday, June 17 at Yankee Soccer Stadium.
