The Hudson River Derby is back, and in anticipation of Saturday's matchup between New York City FC and New York Red Bulls, we added a derby page to the HRB Database. It documents not just every game played, but every goal scored, every hat trick and brace, every red card flashed, every foul whistled.

1. 16 11 Wins

New York City has 10 wins in the 30 games played in the Hudson River Derby in all competitions, while the Red Bulls have 16.

But the tally is closer when you just look at Major League Soccer regular season games: New York City still has 10 wins, and Red Bulls have just 11.

That's because five of the Red Bulls' wins came in tournament play in the US Open Cup (3), Leagues Cup (1), and MLS Cup Playoffs (1).

New York City 2 - 0 NY Red Bulls | Alexander Callens 1' Goal

Three of New York City's sub-10' goals came last year: Hannes Wolf scored in the 3rd minute of the 2-1 win over Red Bulls at Citi Field last May, and Moralez and Martínez scored in the 5th and 7th minutes of the 5-1 win at Red Bull Arena on September 28, 2024.

New York City leads this contest with eight red cards. Even more impressive, NYCFC saw two red cards in the same game three times: In the 3-0 loss in the US Open Cup Quarterfinals on June 6, 2022 at Red Bull Arena; in the 1-1- draw on September 22, 2021 at Red Bull Arena; and in the 1-1 draw on August 22, 2018 at Yankee Stadium.

9. 4 Draws

There have been just four draws in this series. It rarely happens.

The two teams played to a 1-1 draw three times, and to a scoreless draw just once, on September 16, 2023.

You can see all the Hudson River Derby results here.

10. 19 Clean sheets

There have been 19 clean sheets in this series: Fully 60% of the 30 games played to date were shutouts.

Just one was a 0-0 draw. The Red Bulls own 13 of those clean sheets, including the draw — the most recent was the 2-0 win at Citi Field last November in the MLS Cup Eastern Conference Semifinal. New York managed the feat only six times, most recently in the 2-0 win at Yankee Stadium on September 17, 2022.

Carlos Coronel leads all goalkeepers with seven clean sheets in all competitions. Matt Freese's lone clean sheet came in that 0-0 draw in 2023.

There were 30,731 in the stands at Citi Field when these two teams met in the regular season last year – NYCFC won that game 2-1 – making it the ninth-highest attendance in club history.

In other words, the fans turn out for this derby. New York City has drawn more than 30,000 for eight out of the 13 Hudson River Derby matchup in the 13 games that it hosted, including one played behind closed doors because of COVID.

12. 1 Winning head coach

Only one New York City head coach won his inaugural Hudson River Derby: On July 8, 2018, Domé Torrent's NYCFC beat the Red Bulls 1-0.

Not only is he the only New York City head coach to triumph in his first Hudson River Derby, he is the only one to post an overall winning record — his two wins, one draw, and one loss put him top of the club.

Jason Kreis 2015 3 0 0 3 2 7 -5 0.0%
Total 30 10 4 16 32 49 -17 33.3%

For all of Ronny Deila's success with New York City, he wasn't that good at Hudson River Derbies. He beat the Red Bulls just once in five meetings, when NYCFC won 5-2 in an empty Yankee Stadium on November 1, 2020. Only Jason Kreis, who was winless in three meetings in the club's inaugural season, has a worse record among NYCFC head coaches.

As for Pascal Jansen, we'll see where he belongs on this last after the matchup this Saturday at Citi Field.
