Tomás Tengarrinha named head coach of Brooklyn FC

The 34-year-old from Portugal takes over for the women's team as they prepare for the 2025/26 Gainbridge Super League season.

Brooklyn FC's women's team has a new head coach.

Tomás Tengarrinha will take over as the organization prepares for the start of the 2025/26 season of the Gainbridge Super League (which was formerly known as the USL Super League). BFC opens the season in a little less than three weeks when they host Tampa Bay Sun FC at Maimonides Park in Coney Island on Saturday, August 23 at 7:00 pm ET. Tickets start at $23 and can be purchased here.

Brooklyn FC competed in the league's inaugural season last year. The team got off to a strong start, compiling a record of 9W-2D-3L to lead the league at the midseason break. But the team stumbled after returning from a series of friendlies in Italy, and the club fired former head coach Jessica Silva in April with five games left to play. BFC had just one win in the second half of the season, falling to Sixth Place in the eight-team league.

The 34-year-old Tengarrinha was the head coach of SF Damaiense in Liga BPI, also known as Campeonato Nacional Feminino, the top women's soccer league in Portugal. Before that, he was with SC Braga, which also competed in Liga BPI.

“Tomás is a modern, forward-thinking coach with a clear style of play and a strong track record of developing players and leading successful teams,” said Kevin Tenjo, Sporting Director of Brooklyn FC. “He aligns perfectly with our vision of building a high-performing squad that plays entertaining, attack-minded football, engages deeply with the Brooklyn and NYC community, and reflects our shared passion for the game. We believe he’s the ideal leader to guide us into this next phase.”
