The US women’s national team capped off a three-game run of friendlies with a 3-0 win over Canada on Wednesday night at Audi Field in Washington, DC.

The US scored 11 goals total over the international window, with three shutouts in three games played this past week. Claudia Dickey proved sturdy in goal for her second national team start while Sam Coffey kicked off the scoring, leading the way for fellow midfielder Claire Hutton to score her first senior national goal and for former Gotham FC forward Yazmeen Ryan to finish the game with a goal of her own.

Prior to this week's friendlies, US head coach Emma Hayes spoke at length about her vision for a national squad fit to play in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, evaluating players selected for this camp as she begins to narrow down her choices for a World Cup team come October. Tonight’s win is one of several matches Hayes will be looking at when determining her closed roster towards the end of this year.

GAME STATS

No veterans, no problem

If these past three friendlies have proven anything, it’s that the USWNT can still consistently field an impressive team despite the absence of several key figures. The "Triple Espresso" attacking trio of Sophia Smith, Mallory Swanson, and Trinity Rodman are unlikely to make a return to the squad this year, with both Smith and Swanson expecting and Rodman out with injury. No matter, as Hayes brought in several rising talents to fill in for their absence.

Sam Coffey, a member of the 2024 Paris Olympic gold medalist squad, opened up the scoring with a 17th-minute goal after a free kick from Rose Lavelle came her way. However, it was a youngster who notched the team’s second goal and made the biggest impact of the night. In just her sixth national team appearance, 19-year-old Claire Hutton scored her first USWNT senior goal. A corner kick from Lavelle gave Hutton the opportunity to take advantage of the space left by Canada’s back line to head in a goal just before halftime. Yazmeen Ryan finished off the scoring with a decisive strike in the 89th minute.

"[Hayes] is bringing people that are willing and wanting to learn who are really good at soccer and also who are fully invested," USWNT forward Lynn Biyendolo said on the U.S. Soccer podcast ahead of the match. "That does make the veterans' job a bit easier."

All in all, it was a dominant showing from the US While there wasn’t much doubt over whether or not this new USWNT squad would live up to expectations, the end result of multiple-goal games with consecutive shutouts should offer some reassurance for Hayes if she hopes to continue with a similar camp strategy heading into the 2027 World Cup.

Gotham players earn consistent roster spots

It’s quite possible that Gotham players Lavelle, Lilly Reale, and Emily Sonnet will be on Hayes’ short list for her FIFA Women's World Cup roster. All three players started in both the first friendly against Ireland as well as the last friendly against Canada. The three held their own while adjusting to Hayes’ changes.

Reale represents Hayes’s vision for building a new team from the ground up by bringing in youth to replace retired USWNT stars. As one of the younger players at this camp at only 21 years old, Reale is among a group of young US stars who are building camaraderie as they look towards bringing a cohesive national team to the World Cup in two years.

Lavelle scored and assisted several goals, leaving little question about whether or not she’ll receive a call back. Despite Hayes’ desire to form a younger team, there’s no questioning the impact Lavelle has had on this team of youngsters, bringing her experience as an Olympic gold medalist and World Cup champion. As with any inexperienced team, previous leadership is a plus, and Lavelle’s ability to show up on the biggest stages in the sport is an added bonus to inspire a fairly new USWNT team. If Lavelle remains healthy, there’s a high chance she’ll earn a spot on the final roster.

Like Lavelle, Sonnett is a USWNT veteran, having played for the national team that won both the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup and gold at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Her dependability as a defender for the national squad cannot be understated, given her sharp eye and ability to read the ball. Previous positions as a full-back, center-back, and defensive midfielder make her an invaluable asset to the USWNT. Given Hayes' continued confidence in Sonnett's versatility and perseverance, it's likely she will remain one of the key veterans on this squad as the 2027 World Cup approaches.
