Cosmos 2026 kits leaked?

I spy with my little eye: What looks to be the Cosmos second and third kits in a now-deleted Instagram post.

Three Cosmos kits from a now-deleted Instagram post

It appears that Cosmos fans may have gotten an early look at the three kits the team will wear during their inaugural USL League One season.

A since-deleted Instagram post that originally went live on Saturday, January 24, shows three different Cosmos jerseys by Capelli Sport. One is the green home kit, which was officially released back in December. The other two, one yellow and one midnight blue, could be the team's second and third kits.

At first glance, the two previously unseen kits are more interesting than the primary. All three are without a kit sponsor or league patch. But the yellow and midnight blue kits have a vertical speed stripe – green, midnight blue, and sky blue on the yellow shirt, green, yellow, and sky blue on the midnight blue shirt – that brings to mind the 2019 New York City FC home kit. The stripes make good use of the club's famous colors that appear in the team's legendary logo.

The collars are still bare, yes. And the sleeves aren't visible in the image. But they feel far more interesting than the primary kit.

The original Instagram post was captioned "My new Capelli Cosmos shirts."

It should be noted that the Cosmos recently wore a black kit. On Friday, January 23, the Cosmos visited Liga MX side Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente for their first friendly of the preseason, and their first match since the team's relaunch. In that game, which the Cosmos lost 4-1 at Estadio Caliente behind an Ajmeer Spengler first-half penalty kick, we saw the debut of a black kit with no stripe, green and white sleeves, and with Capelli's trademark shoulder squares in black.

Officially, we do not know what role each of the new kits will hold this coming season. However, history might be able to help us.

Between 2011 and 2015, the Cosmos had black goalkeeper kits. First used in the 2011 match between the club and Manchester United, which was the Paul Scholes Testimonial Match, the kit reappeared in league play with various changes. Notably, with a pink strip/arrow on the arms.

The Cosmos history with yellow kits is a bit more robust, with the color used on home and away kits through the years. The team's original 1971 home kit was all yellow with green sleeve cuffs and numbers. That changed to an away kit in 1973 with some design modifications. In 1975, the same year Pelé joined the club, the team's main uniform was changed to a white top and white shorts, resembling those of his club in Brazil, Santos FC. The green and yellow elements were relegated to the trim, while green kits became the away kit.
