Another brutal injury setback for on-loan New York City FC midfielder James Sands, as his current club, FC St. Pauli, announced he needs ankle surgery and is out for the rest of their Bundesliga season.

The injury occurred when FC St. Pauli played to a 0-0 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt on March 8, with Sands forced off in the 81st minute. He had tried to continue playing with the injured ankle, but it wasn't meant to be, and he now needs surgery that will sideline him for months.

St. Pauli, while announcing the injury, wrote in their official release on Sands that, "Initial checks conducted after the game indicated that the joint was relatively stable, but subsequent examinations and tests over the last few days have revealed that surgery is necessary."

This is the second straight season on loan with St. Pauli that ended prematurely due to injury for the Rye, New York native. Sands suffered "a complex right ankle injury involving a fractured fibula and torn medial collateral ligament" in February 2025 while only seven matches into his first stint with the Hamburg-based club.

Now it's his left ankle needing surgery, and once again, Sands has his future thrown into some doubt due to circumstances beyond his control. He's loaned out by NYCFC through June 30, 2026, a second loan agreement struck between the American and German clubs.

With Sands not expected to play again this season, it remains to be seen if he'll stick around in the German Bundesliga, with St. Pauli or with another club. St. Pauli are firmly in a relegation battle, fighting to stay in the German top flight while sitting on 24 points, in 16th Place in the 18-team league and four points above the automatic relegation drop line.

The injury is also a brutal one when considering the outside chance Sands might have still had to crack the United States roster for this summer's FIFA World Cup. Sands, as a regular starter in the Bundesliga, got one look from Mauricio Pochettino late in 2025, but this injury might devastatingly close the curtain on the World Cup dream.

Injury luck has not been on the side of Sands since he made the leap to Germany, and now he'll try to rehab from yet another setback that cuts short a promising season in one of Europe's top leagues.

The #BoysInBrown will be without James #Sands for the coming period. The midfielder requires surgery on his injured left ankle and is ruled out for the rest of the season. #fcsp
