Liverpool vs Wrexham, Leeds vs Sunderland friendlies to be held in NY metro area

The summer soccer schedule in the New York metro area is filling up, with two major friendlies just announced for late July.

First, Liverpool FC will face Wrexham AFC on Wednesday, July 29, at Yankee Stadium. The two will play as part of a friendly series which will also feature Leeds United FC and Sunderland AFC, as first reported in The Athletic.

Leeds and Sunderland will face each other the following day, when they play on Thursday, July 30, at Sports Illustrated Stadium across the Hudson River in Harrison, NJ.

Those matches are a part of a barnstorming tour that will have the four teams play a combined six games over eight days in July and August.

The friendly series will take place after the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is set to hold the final game on Sunday, July 19, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, and well into the restart of the 2026 Major League Soccer season, which will resume on Thursday, July 16.

But New York City FC will sit out that matchday, instead returning to action on Wednesday, July 22, when they face Columbus Crew at Lower.com Field.

New York City will play two games at Yankee Stadium in the same week that Liverpool and Wrexham play each other in the Bronx. First, NYCFC will host Chicago Fire on Saturday, July 25, at 4:30 pm ET. Then, the club will face Toronto FC on Friday, July 31, at 7:30 pm, just one day after Liverpool and Wrexham play.

Sports Illustrated Stadium will also be seeing a lot of soccer games when Leeds United and Sunderland face each other on Wednesday, July 29. Red Bull New York host Charlotte FC on Saturday, July 25, at 7:30 pm ET, then Orlando City one week later on Saturday, July 1, at 7:30 pm ET.
