New York City FC are expected to be active in the secondary transfer window, which opens on Wednesday, July 5 and closes on Wednesday, August 2. With that in mind, we welcome you the 2023 summer edition of the Hudson River Blue Transfer Tracker, your one-stop-shop for all NYCFC transfer news and rumors.

NYCFC loan Gabe Segal to Hapoel Tel Aviv

Maxime Chanot to leave NYCFC?

Maxime Chanot is being linked to a move to AC Ajaccio in France’s Ligue 2. Earlier today, French sports journal L’Equipe reported that Chanot “va signer á l’AC Ajaccio,” and that the contract will keep the defender at the club through 2025.

Maxi Moralez officially re-joins NYCFC

The reunion between Maxi Moralez and New York City FC is now official: Moralez re-signed with the team as a free agent on a new contract that runs through 2024. Based on the unveiling videos released by NYCFC, it looks like the team’s old No 10 is now the new No 27, which will take some getting used to.

Costa Rican attacker Alonso Martínez joins NYCFC

New York City FC have signed a new attacker: 24-year-old Costa Rican forward Alonso Martínez. He joins NYCFC in a transfer from another City Football Group club, Lommel SK in Belgium’s second division, though the financial terms of the deal were not released. Martínez has 12 caps with the Costa Rica national football team.

Take this one with a healthy dose of salt, but: Could Matías Pellegrini be on his way out of NYCFC? The roster on the official team website no longer lists Matí. New signings Mounsef Bakrar, Andrés Perea, and Julián Fernández are there — and Fernández was officially announced just this morning.

Remember, this is pure speculation as of now. We will keep you posted as we learn more.

UPDATED 8/3/23: The roster as updated and now lists Matí. Other changes were made: Malte Amundsen is no longer listed with the team, and the Designated Player classifications are correct.


Julián Fernández officially signs with NYCFC

NYCFC signed another promising young winger from South America, as 19-year-old Julián Fernández officially joined from Vélez Sarsfield in his native Argentina. Terms of the transfer were not fully disclosed, although the team did announce that Fernández joins as a U22 initiative signing. César Luis Merlo reported that the purchase of Fernández cost NYCFC $5 million plus $1.5 million more in bonuses.

NYCFC announced that 15-year-old midfielder Jacob Arroyave signed a contract with the club’s MLS NEXT Pro team.


NYCFC add midfielder Andrés Perea on loan from Philadelphia Union

Status: Official

Andrés Perea, a 22-year-old midfielder with Philadelphia Union, will join NYCFC on loan through the end of the 2023 season for $300,000 in 2024 General Allocation Money. There is no option to buy. Philadelphia acquired Perea in the offseason and was thought to contend for a place in the Starting XI, but he made only one start in eight appearances this season.

Argentine winger Julián Fernández in talks to join NYCFC?

NYCFC might have already found a replacement for the recently-departed Gabriel Pereira, as new reports link 19-year-old Argentine winger Julián Fernández with a transfer from Vélez Sarsfield to NYCFC. César Luis Merlo says that NYCFC have “advanced talks” to sign Fernández, who primarily plays a right winger and has scored three goals in 20 appearances for Vélez during the 2023 Argentine Primera División season.

Gabriel Pereira to Qatar’s Al-Rayyan for $10 million fee

Well, that was fast: Earlier this afternoon, New York City FC issued a statement announcing that star winger Gabriel Pereira transferred to Al-Aryyan in the Qatar Stars League for at least $10 million.

Gabriel Pereira leaving NYCFC for club in Qatar?

Gabriel Pereira is on the verge of a transfer away from NYCFC to join a club in Qatar, according to a report from Tom Bogert of The Athletic.

Fabrizio Romano adds the name of the club signing Pereira, which is apparently Al-Rayyan SC in Qatar’s Qatar Stars League. The Italian transfer expert describes negotiations between NYCFC and Al-Rayyan as “advanced.”

• Taty Castellanos permanent transfer to Lazio made official

July 21, 2023
Status: Official

And that is that: Taty Castellanos is no longer a part of NYCFC after officially making a permanent transfer to SS Lazio for a reported €20 million fee (€15 million up front and up to €5 million in add-ons, according to reports). Various news outlets reported that the deal was finalized after he passed his medical exam on Monday, July 17, but the announcement was delayed until his visa was sorted out.

Birk Risa signs with NYCFC

Birk Risa has officially joined NYCFC in the second big signing of the summer. The 25-year-old Norwegian central defender joins from Molde FK on a contract through 2025, with an option for 2026.

Taty Castellanos will play for one of the biggest clubs in Italy after Lazio reportedly will pay a €15 million fee plus incentives to sign the 24-year-old, making it one of the most lucrative transfers in the history of MLS.

When journalist César Luis Merlo tweets it’s a done deal, it’s a done deal. And he just tweeted that Taty Castllanos signed with Lazio through 2028 for €15 million plus bonuses. He goes on to report that Taty will travel to Italy on Tuesday, July 18.


Birk Risa close to signing with NYCFC: Report

It’s rumored that NYCFC have come to terms with Norwegian club Molde FK over the sale of 25-year-old left-footed center back Birk Risa. The Risa news comes one day after NYCFC confirmed the signing of Algerian striker Mounsef Bakrar, with sporting director David Lee appearing to be on the verge of addressing both of his club’s most glaring roster needs—striker and left-footed center back.

Tony Alfaro traded to LA Galaxy for $500,000

NYCFC traded center-back Tony Alfaro to LA Galaxy for up to $500,000 in General Allocation Money. The deal doesn’t come as a surprise. Alfaro joined NYCFC from DC United in December 2022, but the 30-year-old never found his place in the club’s lineup. Read more here.


Mounsef Bakrar officially joins NYCFC

Signed, sealed, and delivered: NYCFC have a new striker. The club officially announced the signing of 22-year-old Algerian forward Mounsef Bakrar, who joins from NK Istra in Croatia under the MLS U22 initiative.

NYCFC sign 16-year-old Drew Baiera to a Homegrown Contract

NYCFC announced earlier today that the club signed 16-year-old defender Drew Baiera to a Homegrown Contract through 2027 with an option for 2028. Baiera is the 12th Homegrown to sign a contract with the NYCFC Senior Team, and the third player from the NYCFC Academy born in 2007.

Is a new striker finally on the way to NYCFC? A report from Croatian sports outlet Sportske Novosti claims that Mounsef Bakrar, a 22-year-old Algerian forward with NK Istra 1961 in Croatia’s top flight, is coming to NYCFC.
