The first chapter in Boston Legacy FC’s history began with setting a new record when more than 30,000 fans packed the stands at Gillette Stadium for the highest-attended National Women's Soccer League debut. But when the final whistle sounded Saturday afternoon, it was defending champions Gotham FC who walked away with the result.

The Bats opened their 2026 NWSL campaign with a 1–0 victory over Boston, collecting three points to start their title defense.

The decisive moment came in the 55th minute, when Spanish forward Esther González capitalized on a cross from defender Lilly Reale and calmly finished past Boston goalkeeper Casey Murphy. The goal proved to be the difference in a tight contest that was physical and defensive throughout.

A historic setting for Boston

Despite the result, the afternoon marked a milestone for Boston’s return to the NWSL. The well-attended game marked the city’s first women’s professional soccer game since the Boston Breakers ceased operations in 2018.

The Legacy, one of two expansion teams joining the NWSL in 2026 alongside Denver Summit FC, are beginning their first season under head coach Filipa Patão as the league expands to 16 teams.

"As a club, the coaches and the players should be really proud because I feel they’re going to have fantastic success and a fantastic season ahead of them," said Gotham FC head coach Juan Carlos Amorós. "I know how much work has probably been happening behind the scenes for years to make sure they could get the ball rolling, and I think they’ve done a fantastic job."

Boston’s opening lineup reflected the club’s international ambitions, and the team showed early composure in midfield during a competitive first half that produced few clear chances. Murphy, who has experience with the U.S. Women’s National Team, kept the game level with a diving stop on a first-half attempt from Gotham striker Jaedyn Shaw.

"It helps that we've been in a lot of situations and the team has been together already," said Gotham midfielder Jaelin Howell. "Just putting ourselves in various situations, holding on to a lead, trying to score goals – tight stuff that we have experience with – really helps."

Gotham find a breakthrough

For long stretches, Gotham struggled to break down Boston’s aggressive press. The expansion side disrupted passing lanes and forced the 2025 champions to work through wide areas to generate attacks.

Eventually, the pressure paid off. Midway through the second half, Gotham’s front line forced a defensive scramble in the Boston penalty area. González reacted quickest to a partial clearance after a mishit by Legacy defender Bianca St-Georges. Passes between Shaw and Reale eventually led to a cross by Reale, missing Legacy rookie Jordyn Dudley and allowing González the chance to fire the ball home, giving Gotham a 1–0 advantage.

"They had a really aggressive press, so figuring out how to break that down and get around it was difficult," Reale said. "But I think once we were able to get out to the other side, that's when I felt I was able to go forward and attack and then just provide some crosses [for] runners [to] go in and finish."

González is coming off a strong 2025 season, when she finished second in the league with 13 goals. Since joining Gotham in 2023, the Spanish international has been a consistent contributor, often pulling out game-winning goals under immense pressure — which is just what she did today.

Champions start strong

Statistically, the match was close. Gotham held a slight edge in possession and produced four shots on goal compared to Boston’s two. Gotham goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger was rarely called upon but made two key saves to secure the shutout, while rookie Jordynn Dudley made her professional and Gotham FC debut.

"Jordynn Dudley got a lot of fouls, and in the first game, your emotions can get carried away," Amorós said. "She did amazing to keep calm and continue to do her job. I want to congratulate her because she’s going to be an important player for us and an exciting player."

Boston’s hopes of a comeback suffered a setback in the 77th minute when St-Georges received her second yellow card of the match and was sent off, forcing the Legacy to finish with 10 players.

For the Bats, the win continues a strong run in season openers under head coach Juan Carlos Amorós and provides early momentum as the club pursues a second consecutive NWSL championship.

While the defeat may sting for Boston, the club’s competitive performance and the energy from the record crowd suggest the expansion side could quickly become a factor in the league. "I think they’re a really physical, fast, transitional team," said Howell. "I think they're going to do well with that. It was fun playing. There was an amazing stadium atmosphere so that was super cool. It was really great to be able to play in something like that."
