New York City FC received a $302,962 payment from FIFA as a part of the Club Benefits Program that distributes money to the clubs of players who participated in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Because former NYCFC captain Sean Johnson was one of the three goalkeepers on the USMNT roster at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the club are the beneficiary of the payment. According to a post by Jonathan Sigal on MLS.com, FIFA allocates $10,950 per player per day, whether or not that player saw any minutes in the tournament. “In its entirety, the CBP will pay out $209 million following the release of 837 players from 440 clubs,” according to Sigal.

In all, 36 MLS players from 25 teams were on 2022 FIFA World Cup rosters. The $1 million paid to CF Montréal leads the league, followed by Seattle Sounders ($826,757), and LAFC ($764,605).
Manchester City leads all clubs globally, with $4.6 million in payments. They’re followed by FC Barcelona ($4.5 million), and Bayern Munich ($4.3 million).
In order to receive a payment, the club must first register with the program. Payments are awarded to the club or clubs where the player was registered during the two years of qualification matches leading up to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in addition to the tournament itself.
Johnson signed with Toronto FC shortly after returning from the 2022 FIFA World Cup. But because Johnson was with NYCFC for the entirety of that time, the full payment goes to New York City.
