Gotham FC are one win away from a second NWSL Championship title in three years as they travel to San Jose, CA, to face No 2-seed Washington Spirit at PayPal Park.

Gotham’s mix of veteran leadership and emerging talent carried them through a rough end to the season, followed by a strong run in the playoffs, while the Spirit’s consistency and depth have made them one of the league’s most reliable teams in the table. With a championship on the line, this matchup pits Gotham’s resilience against the Spirit’s fast-paced attack.

Gotham defied the odds to knock out the top-seed Kansas City Current in the quarterfinals before going on to defeat defending champions the Orlando Pride in the semifinals. The Spirit, for their part, were forced into a penalty shootout against Racing Louisville to advance to the semifinals, then easily defeated the Portland Thorns to book their spot in the finals.

With the Spirit also looking to capture their second NWSL Championship title, there’s no doubt they’ll look to dominate possession early on. Washington dominate the rivalry with 16 wins and 45 goals scored, but recent results are more even. Gotham have a record of 2W-2D-1L in the last five games played, with Washington winning the penalty shootout after last year’s 1-1 draw in the 2024 NWSL Playoffs. In that run of fixtures, Gotham scored five goals to Washington’s three.

Gotham won the first fixture played this year, when they beat Washington 3-0 in DC in April. The two played to a scoreless draw when they faced each other at Sports Illustrated Stadium in August.

• Player Availability: Defender Tierna Davidson (knee), forward Geyse (knee), and midfielder Taryn Torres (knee) are all OUT.
• Is Esther González fully recovered? She returned to the pitch last week against Orlando after a hip injury left her sidelined for two regular-season games. Despite not scoring, she looked quick on her feet and steady with her passes. It remains to be seen whether or not head coach Juan Carlos Amorós will include her in the XI.
• Jaedyn Shaw is a large part of the reason why Gotham is in this season’s NWSL Championship final. With a goal and assist against the Kansas City Current and the game-winning goal against the Orlando Pride, she has been the indisputable MVP for the Bats this tournament. She will more than likely be starting on the front line this afternoon.
• Ann-Katrin Berger in goal will be Gotham’s secret weapon. The German national was a brick wall against both the Pride and the Current, preventing both teams from tying the game in the dying minutes of stoppage time. If it comes down to the wire, she’ll need to be at the top of her game to give her teammates more breathing room to score.
• Who will make up Gotham’s coveted midfield? Amorós has tried numerous combinations of rookies and veterans throughout the NWSL season. Rose Lavelle has been the constant, anchoring the flow between the offensive and defensive lines.

The award caps a breakout year for the 22-year-old defender. In addition, Gotham FC striker Esther González was named to the 2025 NWSL Best XI.

• Player Availability: Defender Gabby Carle (thigh), striker Ashley Hatch (maternity leave), goalkeeper Lyza Jessee (wrist), defender Casey Krueger (maternity leave), forward Ouleye Sarr (back), and midfielder Andi Sullivan (maternity leave) are all OUT.
• Trinity Rodman was back on the lineup card for Washington’s 2-0 win over Portland in the semifinals, and even made a substitute appearance in the 89th minute. But the Spirit’s star attacker is still recovering from the knee sprain that sidelined her in October, and is unlikely to start and go the full 90 minutes today.
